The narrative revolves around four key characters, each of whom plays a pivotal role in predicting and profiting from the impending crisis. negligence, and incompetence within the financial industry. They discover that the entire system is built on unsustainable loans and irresponsible lending practices. Baum’s character represents the moral outrage many felt toward the financial institutions that allowed the crisis to happen. His journey from skepticism to conviction adds depth to the film’s critique of the industry.
Jared Vennett, a former investment banker turned mortgage broker, is another key figure in the story. Vennett sees the crisis as a unique opportunity to profit and becomes a crucial link between Burry’s discovery and other investors. He helps create synthetic collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), financial instruments designed to profit from the housing market’s collapse.
Vennett’s character embodies the opportunistic and profit-driven mindset that fueled much of the crisis. He is more concerned with the financial windfall than the human consequences of the market’s collapse, highlighting the predatory nature of the industry.
Finally, there is Ben Rickert, a retired bond trader who has grown disillusioned with the financial system after a near-death experience. Rickert is reluctant to return to the industry but is drawn back in by Burry’s foresight. His experience and expertise in the bond market prove invaluable as he
helps Burry and his team navigate the complexities of the market and avoid potential risks. Rickert’s character adds a sense of reflection and regret to the story, offering a perspective on the personal and moral cost of engaging with a corrupt system.
As the housing market begins to unravel, the four characters find themselves caught in the midst of a global financial catastrophe. They face the moral dilemma of profiting from a disaster that will destroy countless lives.
